A Highland Cow resting beneath apple trees at Ruckle Heritage Farm. Highland cattle are a Scottish breed of rustic beef cattle, originating in the Scottish Highlands. Highland Cattle have long horns and a shaggy coat, and were imported into Canada in the 1880s. Henry Ruckle started farming this area of Salt Spring Island in 1872. Ruckle Heritage Farm is still an active farm within Ruckle Provincial Park on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada and is one of the oldest operating farms in BC.
