A closeup of an Adult Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) head and neck as it walked through a shoreline wetland searching for food for its nearby chick. The Crane's diet consists of seeds, grains, berries, tubers, invertebrates, and small vertebrates. The chicks leave the nest within 8 hours of hatching. Sandhill Cranes have a relatively long lifespan, with an average around 20 years. The species itself is over 2.5 million years old.
