Preening Adult Sandhill Crane
sandhill-crane-preening-59741.jpg
A Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) adult preening its feathers. Sandhill Cranes can be anywhere from this reddish brown color to mostly grey. The reddish brown comes from mud the Crane rubs on its feathers and here they contain some iron which colors the feathers. Sandhill Cranes have a relatively long lifespan, with an average around 20 years. The species itself is over 2.5 million years old.
